What is Lomaira™?

Lomaira™ (phentermine hydrochloride USP) 8 mg tablets, CIV is in the class of drugs known as “anorectics”, also known as appetite suppressants. It has not been established that the primary action of such drugs in treating obesity is one of appetite suppression since other central nervous system actions, or metabolic effects, may also be involved.

In relatively short-term clinical trials, adult obese subjects instructed in dietary management and treated with anorectic drugs lost more weight on the average than those treated with placebo and diet. The amount of weight loss associated with the use of an anorectic drug varies from trial to trial, and the increased weight loss appears to be related in part to variables other than the drugs prescribed, such as the healthcare professional, the population treated and the diet prescribed.1

The rate of weight loss is greatest in the first weeks of therapy for both drug and placebo subjects and tends to decrease in succeeding weeks. If your body becomes adjusted to the maximum dose of phentermine so that its effects are experienced less strongly, the maximum dose should not be exceeded in an attempt to increase the effect.

Taking phentermine with other drugs for weight loss is not recommended. Primary pulmonary hypertension (PPH), a rare fatal lung disease, has been reported in patients who had taken a combination of phentermine and fenfluramine or dexfenfluramine for weight loss. The possible association between phentermine use alone and PPH cannot be ruled out. Patients should report immediately if they experience any decrease in the amount of exercise that they can normally tolerate, shortness of breath, chest or heart pain, fainting or swelling in the lower legs.

Customize a Treatment Plan

Lomaira is the only strength of phentermine hydrochloride that is FDA-approved to be used up to three times a day. The usual adult dose of Lomaira is one tablet three times a day ½ hour before meals. The butterfly-shaped tablet is scored to facilitate administering one half of the usual dosage for patients not requiring the full dose so that doctors and patients can work together to customize a weight-loss treatment plan to best meet each patient’s needs.

Dosage should be individualized to obtain an adequate response with the lowest effective dose. Phentermine hydrochloride is not recommended for use in pediatric patients less than or equal to 16 years of age. Late evening medication should be avoided because of the possibility of resulting insomnia.
